SERMON: Jephthah, the Comeback Player of the Year

SCRIPTURE: Judges 10-11

SPEAKER: Brad Harper

DATE:  September 3, 1989

Note:  We do not have a manuscript of this sermon, only of the outline.

Introduction:  Have you ever felt like just when life was going along fine, that through no fault of your own, the roof caved in, and it seemed like you might never be able to crawl out from under it all?  Indeed, most of us have faced such discouragement at one time or another and have wondered if even God has deserted us.  It is for such times that the story of Jephthah’s comeback against overwhelming odds should be a great encouragement.

The Times of Jephthah (10:6‑16)

         God reacts to Israel’s rebellion.

         God responds to Israel’s repentance.

The life of Jephthah

         His rejection

         His survival

         His comeback

         His victory

         His vow

The lessons of Jephthah

God delights in using what has been rejected by men.

God can use the hard times to prepare us for his unique purpose in our lives.

God will use us powerfully if we serve him faithfully, whatever our

                  situation.

God’s highest priority is always commitment to obedience, not vows of

                  sacrifice.
